Michael French returns to EastEnders 20 years since his first appearance as notorious womaniser David Wicks

He was one of Albert Square’s most legendary residents.

Now 20 years since he first appeared in EastEnders, David Wicks is coming back to Walford.

Michael French will reprise his role as the notorious womaniser later this year

David was briefly seen in January 2012, as he came to see his dying mother Pat – played by Pam St. Clement – before she passed on.

But his visit wasn’t without drama as he battled with Carol’s brother Derek Branning (Jamie Foreman), and even planned to run away with his former love but he left her heartbroken as yet again he left Walford on his own.

However, in his absence from the Square, David had been attempting to get back in touch with Carol (Lindsey Coulson), but her evil sibling kept his letters a secret, with the truth only coming out after Derek died.

With so much time passing since Wicks tried to reconnect with his former love, viewers will certainly be interested to see how his storyline will play out, especially after the many volatile narratives in the past David has been a main player in.

Walking into Walford in 1994 the womaniser soon struck up a relationship with Bianca Jackson – played by Patsy Palmer – but soon found out she was his daughter.

Afterwards David moved on to the likes of Sam Mitchell and Cindy Beale, the wife of his half-brother Ian, who tried to run off with Wicks and her two children Lucy and Peter.

During his leave from Albert Square, Michael, 50, starred in another BBC soap, Holby City before moving on to its sister show Casualty.

EastEnders bosses are excited to have Michael back in the cast, with Executive Producer Lorraine Newman stating: ‘It’s an absolute honour to have Michael back in the show.

‘Michael created an iconic character in David and with such rich history, with Ian, Bianca and of course, Carol, there’s plenty to explore in the future.’
